Jacob's mistake

Jacob wiped the droplets of sweat on his wrinkled forehead he had been here many hours it was a dark room with no window and a bulb with faint light. He sat on a small stool and even though he was a six foot four inches young man he felt so small.

He was a suspect for the murder of a woman not just any woman, a lecturer, his project supervisor.

It was definitely not deliberate what was only supposed to be an opportunity for him turned out to be chaotic.

The door swung open and a huge man dressed in a black shirt and old grey trousers walked in hastily and sat in another stool much higher than the one he sat on.

Three days earlier, he had gotten a mail from Mrs Christiana demanding that he starts his final year project afresh as the one he had submitted for review was a piece of garbage and not beneficial to society.

"Garbage?" He yelled as he picked up a plastic cup half filled with fanta and flung it in the air causing a mess as the liquid spilled on the floor.

Jacob had always been a student of excellence having a cgpa of 4.90.

For four months he experienced a major setback which he termed "village people wahala."

His supervisor had made it a habit to ridicule his ideas, rejecting his proposals and now he was failing her course.

"Why the noise?" His roommate barked as he covered himself with a thin blanket and went back to sleep.

Jacob felt frustrated, everyone was done with their project even his lazy roommate Samson had submitted his final chapter.

He looked at his wristwatch, it was midnight. He had to make a decision, he was going to prove that his project was the best anyone had ever seen even if it meant breaking some rules. Luckily his project supervisor had bragged about the car her rich husband had given to her. He was going to use her to prove to other lecturers that he knew what he was doing.

Jacob walked into Mrs Christiana's office to find her sipping coffee.

"Why are you here?"

"I'm your student ma."

A young woman walked in "come take a look at this ma!" She said.

Mrs christiana followed her out of the office.

He moved over to her computer and noticed it was open. He figured out her password, wrote it down quickly on a piece of paper and began to install an app called swift .

"What are you doing?" Mrs christiana questioned as she entered the office to find Jacob bent over her desk.

"I heard a noise and came to check what it was" he responded as he walked away from her computer.

"You should use deodorant, attempting to murder people with body odour is foul, dont you think?" He looked at her fighting every urge to talk back.

"I am busy for now come back later" she ordered

Jacob walked out of her office with a smirk on his face hoping everything would go as planned.

Mrs christiana starter her automatic car, connected her laptop and began to listen to a podcast as she drove out of the school building.

"Kindness is a character trait everyone must possess" a melodic voice spoke in the background.

She stopped by the road side to buy roasted corn and continued her journey.

Jacob stared at his computer screen intensely pressing the keyboards harshly, after twenty minutes of battle he was able to link swift to the car through the the laptop connection and find her location.

Mrs christiana watched in horror as the windscreen wiper moved without control the podcast had stopped playing and her car horn wouldn't stop causing a deafening noise. She tapped the smart screen aggressively but nothing worked.

Jacob was having so much fun, he imagined how everyone was going to respect him after this. All he had to do was prove that swift could tell her car location, she was definitely going to chew her words and give him the A he deserved. His phone rang, it was a call from Ifeoma his girlfriend who had dumped and blocked him two months ago a text came in moments later saying she missed him. He stood up immediately reading the text over and over again in disbelief.

Mrs christiana wrapped her fingers tightly around the steering wheel and began to say her last prayers as the brakes of her car failed and in an attempt to avoid hitting the car before her, she swerved with full force and crashed into a fence.

Jacob tried to call Ifeoma back but she wouldn't pick. He took a quick glance at the computer and noticed that the location of Mrs christiana was no longer accessible, something was definitely wrong and he began to panic.

Two hour later he heard a knock on the door and opened to find detective Femi standing with a blank stare on his face.

"Are you Jacob Adewale?"

"Yes sir." he stammered

"It is about Mrs christiana and you need to come with us to the station now"

"What do you mean sir?"

"You'll understand when we get there."

Jacob saw the world differently, to him, there was always an opportunity even in the midst of war. His mother had warned him countless times

"You are brilliant but this your busy body is too much." she was right how did he think that Mrs christiana was ever going to approve an app that could tell the location and worse he did that without her permission.

Now he was here sitting face to face with detective Femi. A million things ran through his mind, so many questions that needed answers, answers he didn't really want to know because he was sure he wouldn't like. His throat felt dry and his heart was beating loudly in his chest he was sure detective Femi could hear.

"Why did you do it?"

"It wasn't intentional sir I didn't commit any crime."

"The CCTV footage shows that you were the only student who visited Mrs Christiana's office that morning and after thorough investigation the location of the hacker was your room"

"But sir I swear I didn't mean for this to happen."

"Oga you hacked your lecturers car and it crashed."

"But I just wanted to prove that I understand the basics-"

"Prove what, basics of what?"

He stared long and hard at Jacob and finally said

"You're lucky."

"Lucky?"

"Yes miraculously she was unconscious for a few hours and sustained minor injuries. Surprisingly her husband was kind enough to drop all the charges."

Jacob fell to his knees and wept like a baby glad he was free, he was never going to do this again, but now he needed to start working on another project, something great to make the world a better place.
