Sarai stared through her makeshift spyglass at the woman at the corner of the room. She was chewing a spider and watching Sarai inquisitively. Or at least, Sarai assumed that was what her tilted head meant, as the woman had no eyeballs.

She swiveled in her chair, still looking out her rolled up papers, and noticed a movement at the opposite end of the room. She rolled the papers even tighter, focusing her gaze. It was a little boy, no more than two. He was on all fours trying to touch his toe with his chin, his belly facing upwards. It was such a silly posture, Sarai chuckled. His head snapped up at the sound of her laughter and he growled.

That wasn't good. There were always the troublesome ones. Sarai never knew which one was bad until they growled.

Last week, it was the seemingly nice old lady selling candies to the children in the room. Sarai had expected it to be the angry man who kept stealing the candies from the kids, but when the woman growled and came after her, her worldview had shattered. Appearances really can be deceiving.

The boy crawled slowly towards the lady with her arachnidial snack and seemed intent on ignoring Sarai, so after a few minutes of watching him suspiciously, she decided to search for other beings.

She did a 360 and stilled when she could not find the crawling boy where she left him. A growling to her right had her searching for the door with her spyglass. The door came into view just as the crawling boy reached her, and she shrieked at the face staring down at her.

Mr. Kay was not smiling as he pushed her roll downwards.

"Sarai, the next time I catch you in my seat playing pirate, I will flog the foolishness out of you."

Her heart was racing as she scurried to her seat, but it was better Mr. Kay than the crawling boy. Her classmates snickered at her and mimicked looking out a rolled book, awing and gasping as they turned their heads this way and that way.

She dropped the papers and forcefully straightened them out. No more portals for her again. Her mother already warned her those beings were evil.

As Mr. Kay began to teach, Sarai's left eye twitched shut and with her lone eye, she could see the door to the other room.

Did she forget to shut it?

She blanched. Yes, yes she did.

The door was ajar and there, in the corridor, was the crawling boy smiling at her.
