What We Deserve

I have three wishes, and I plan to use them well, for writers truly deserve these.

I wish for a world where writers brimming with stories get their requests met with enthusiastic nods. Here, no dream is too vast, no project is too daring, and no timeline is too rigid. Writers can send out proposals and the response is swift and not 10 months later. Grants and scholarships are accessible and flood in like rivers converge to support the creative journey. There’s no need to spill your life history in applications, no endless unnecessary questions about where you see yourself in five years. You can pitch a writing residency that is not on Earth but on the moon and can share your vision with the full audacity of a Yoruba man. And no one will question whether it can work in the same way Theranos was received.

My second wish is for respect and recognition for writers. No longer would people respond with "huh" when you share what you do for a living. Writers should be able to go on world tours, selling out arenas — after all, if Taylor Swift can do it, why not writers? I want writers to see their books in schools and libraries in remote villages much like how Big Sugar and Big Tobacco products reach even the most distant corners of the world. I want to be able to create a platform for writers, a space where they can share their voices and find support. I can get Series C funding in amounts that would shock even Elon Musk, and have more investors lining up to contribute. On this platform, every submission would be read and every voice heard.

My third wish is that amidst all the success and recognition, writers are given space to rest and can spend the day doing nothing. We can remain grounded and remember the days when "nos" were shared like party packs at a 1-year-old birthday. Writers can sleep well, and continue to dream, knowing that in this world, nothing is too big or too ambitious.

In an ideal world, three wishes would never be enough to give writers what they truly deserve.
