You never know what life would whisper to you
Leila could have sworn she was born to live a boring life and would never believe otherwise. Well, what else does working as an accountant and living in a rented two-bedroom apartment located in an estate where everyone takes minding their business seriously as though it’s a ticket to heaven brings about, if not boredom? Not that she was complaining, she was already used to or getting used to it and has already started appreciating the boredom that is her life, but once in a while, the mind does involve itself in fantasies, like it is doing currently.
“Open the damn door,” a voice called from outside, knocking her door fiercely. Her friend, Matilda has no tact whatsoever and for someone who grew up in a civilized environment, she sure was a bad example.
“Tilda, there’s no harm in pretending to at least be civilized,” she opened the door to a smiling light and round face with blond hair. “I swear I wonder if you had not been born in the wrong generation.”
“Just open the door wide and let me in.” Matilda pushed her friend and entered into the flowery decorated living room. Kicking her gold slippers off her feet, she jumped on the couch and watched with satisfaction how the slippers landed in different directions to Leila’s dismay.
“My house is not unkempt for the love of Christ, it’s about time you know this,” Leila hissed as she went packing the slippers to put them in a corner. She took her seat beside her friend when she was done and sighed.
“Do you still think your life is meant to be filled with boredom?” Matilda asked, placing her foot on the sofa. She wasn’t new to her friend’s constant complaints of boredom and she found it surprising because it was clear to everyone who knew Leila that her life wasn’t boring by default, her life was boring by choice. Even if the opportunity to have fun was staring right at her, she would never take it.
“As a matter of fact, I’m convinced I’m meant to die a bored woman,” Leila sighed, slid down the couch and raised both feet on her glass centered table while her hands rested on knees.
Matilda rolled her eyes and adjusted on her seat, turning to face her friend. “Yes, but I’m here to share some good news with you, the devil has failed over your life and you have been redeemed. Now, you will die a fulfilled woman who lived life to the fullest.”
Leila blinked, “what does that mean?”
“That,” Matilda’s lower lip curved slightly “means you my darling and I are going on a little adventure.”
Leila twirled around suddenly, it was by sheer luck her hair didn’t hit Matilda’s face. She knew her friend’s definition of fun and adventure literally means putting your life in death’s hands. Her grey eyes wide-opened, her dark hair standing straight as though they have grown legs of their own and her ears perking out, she shook her head. “And who would want to go on an adventure with you?”
“You, Leila Iniola George.”
“When my father is not a bastard.”
“Of course,” Matilda nodded. “It is exactly why you would, otherwise, you might not have to.”
“Never!”
“I don’t know how you did it or how I let you talk me into this,” Leila grunted and hissed as she strapped her seat belt on a few hours later. “I sincerely hope I won’t regret this, otherwise, I might have to die.”
“Dramatic much?” Matilda rolled her eyes. “My darling, even you know the best fun you can ever have is with Matilda.”
“I assure you if anything happens to me, my ghost would torment you forever,” she turned for emphasis. “Forever! Till eternity.”
“I’m game.” Matilda roared with laughter as she brought the engine to life and stepped on the pedal.
The two friends drove in comfortable silence, with Leila reading a book on her phone. It was not until they had been driving for forty-five minutes, that she felt inclined to ask where their destination was. “And where again do you say we are going to?”
“Crimson Valley,” Matilda replied, not taking her eyes off the road. “Heard it’s a nice and interesting place,” she added.
“So, when exactly are we going to start using the GPS, because you madam, have no idea where this place is.”
“Trust your chauffeur darling,” she drawled, purposely to annoy and amuse her friend.
