Dear Elite Reader,
My name is Ose Casely, and I am a Creative Non-Fiction (CNF) writer. This means that I write about real life experiences, be it my own or that of others. I write it in a creative and relatable way in such a way that my audience have an enjoyable read.
Inspired by Luvie Ajayi, the author of Professional troublemaker, I write in a conversational manner, as though my reader and I are old friends catching up on the latest gist. Because I am Nigerian, I write incorporating the Nigerian colloquial language; pidgin English, and I adopt modern day slangs and chat-like acronyms like omo, abi, lol, ikr, etc. This gives my pieces an even more intimate and exclusive feel to my audience.
This is the standard for my writing and I try to regulate my writing style as much as each piece needs it to take it’s own unique shape. I must say that this style of writing is relatively new. It was not the type of articles or essays I read growing up, and as much as reading should help in improving one’s vocabulary, grammar and usage of words, I believe that the ultimate goal of a write up should be to convey one’s message in an easily accessible fashion.
I believe creative non-fiction, and in the style that I write it is important to this generation. This is because a lot of people have been dissuaded from picking up a book to read because they end up falling asleep. All the while we thought the reader was the problem, the book was. And it may not that the book was bad in the general scheme of things but, I’ve learnt over time that we all assimilate differently and our intellectual needs differ. Hence my style of writing. however unconventional it may seem, I believe is necessary to improve the culture of reading, making it so that important lessons and facts are passed on to that person who may desperately need it. It is not important how the knowledge is passed, but that is passed and adequately received.
Creative Non-Fiction can take on various patterns, like an autobiography, travelogue, literary journalism, nonfiction, science, history, cultural criticism/lifestyle writing, food writing etc. It usually takes the form of articles and can be written as blog posts and also books, I have two CNF books under my belt already and they are very helpful books that serve a specific audience.
While I dabble into purely fiction and purely non-fiction works every now and again, I have settled on CNF as my most reliable and enjoyable source of storytelling. And at the end of the day, that’s what I live for. Telling relatable and impactful stories.
