Have you tried convincing a traditional African parent that you need space because your mental health is deteriorating? Or maybe cried in front of them because navigating adulthood seemed like a never ending "Esther was black and broke" journey?

I raise you Daniel, John, Divine, and the many children living on the streets that don't have the traditional African parents to convince. They justifiably don't need to convince anyone because who is really listening?

They are fueled by their inner strength. It is their guiding light. It illuminates their paths and empowers them to overcome the challenges they can't talk to anyone about. Power resides within them. In the midst of uncertainty, they embody a unique kind of resilience and inner strength. These young souls face unimaginable challenges on a daily basis, yet their spirit remains unbreakable.

Mental health challenges among children living on the street can be quite complex and require special attention. They often face a unique set of difficulties that can have a significant impact on their mental well-being.

Being exposed to traumatic experiences, including physical, emotional, and sexual abuse can lead to various mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.

Due to the harsh realities of street life, some children may turn to substance abuse as a means of coping with their circumstances. Substance abuse can worsen their mental health and create a cycle of dependency.

Children living on the street are often plagued with stigmatization by society, leading to social isolation. This isolation can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety, making it harder for them to seek help.

They also face significant barriers when it comes to accessing mental health services. Lack of financial resources and awareness of available services can prevent them from receiving the support they need.

Addressing the mental health needs of children living on the street can help them heal, rebuild their lives, and have a brighter future. Together, we can make a difference and create a more inclusive and compassionate society by providing safe spaces, encouraging self-expression and building supportive communities.

By providing safe spaces and Havens for them, we are giving them the stability they need to thrive. These safe havens become platforms for them to discover and harness their inner resilience.

The children often face a lack of opportunities to express themselves. Encouraging their creativity through art, music, or storytelling can help them tap into their inner strength. These outlets provide a means for them to process their emotions, heal from past traumas, and discover their unique voices.

Supportive communities. This is essential in their journey towards mental wellness. By connecting them with mentors, volunteers, and other children who have experienced similar challenges, we create a network of support and encouragement. These relationships foster a sense of belonging and empower them to face uncertainties with newfound confidence.

One of our goals as Priests on the Streets is to empower these resilient souls to navigate uncertain times with courage and determination allowing their inner strength to shine brightly and transform their lives.
