It would be my third time taking a trip with this experimental drug called Cielix-20. The druglord had told me it would clear my mind and I'd see my late wife again. So far, it worked just fine. Until tonight.
Instead of the usual grassy field where I'd see Sophia running towards me, laughing, I was lost in a dark room, with no idea of my bearing.
An eerie feeling crept up my spine as I began wandering through the vast, room.
Something was terribly wrong.
'Call upon God while he may be found!' a voice that sounded a lot like Sophia's whispered into my mind.
I frowned in annoyance at the intruding thought.
The last vestiges of my moral code had been shattered when Sophia, my very pregnant wife and the love of my life, was butchered up in our home by an unknown killer.
Till date, I blame myself for going for that overnight shift and sleeping right through all her phone calls. Guilt overwhelmed me.
Of course, the police were of no help. I was their prime suspect and had to endure gruelling interrogation sessions. Thankfully, I had a strong alibi so I was released.
I soon began receiving anonymous threats. I had nightmares where Sophia and our unborn child would cry out for help. A phantom would snatch them away, leaving me frozen in terror.
Secretly, I was on a quest for revenge. It drove me to contact Sophia to find out who her killer was.
A large clanging sound a distance away jolted me. A baby's wail sounded, followed by a feminine scream. Sophia! Our child! I had to rescue them!
As fast as I could manage, I reached the door and opened it into a hallway that seemed unending. There were holes in the walls that made ghoulish shadows to dance in the dim rays of the moonlight.
As I made my way down the hallway, slimy hands protruded from the ceiling and walls. They began to slap and hit me. Their claws tore into my clothes and pulled back my skin, causing blood to ooze out. Whispers and mutterings of condemnation filled my mind. I screamed in pain and curled up into a ball.
'Call on Jesus,' I heard Sophia whisper. 'Do it now, before it's too late!'
'Jesus?' I mused. 'Does he even exist? If he does, I'm sure he has more important business.'
After an infinitely long time, the hands stopped their assault.
Bruised and battered, I staggered to my feet and noticed that I was in our bedroom.
Sophia was on the bed, a look of terror on her face.
That was when I saw him—or it—hovering above her. The dark hooded figure turned and peered into my soul with his black sunken eyes. With a smirk and a flick of its forked tongue, it swung its dagger straight into my wife's belly and began twisting.
I screamed for it to stop. It paid me no mind until it was done.
"Who are you?" I spluttered, hot tears flowing.
An evil chuckle filled my ears. "I am Gross Darkness. I have come to take your soul with me. Dabbling in drugs and necromancy only opens the portal wider for me to lay a legal claim on you."
It flung its dagger at me so fast I had no time to think or duck.
When the blade hit my chest and excruciating pain flooded my senses, a single regret swarmed my mind. If only I'd taken my chances and called upon Jesus, per
haps my situation would have been different.
