December 31st, 2023.

I think new years are overrated.

It is another end of the year and as social media explodes with declarations of ‘New Year, New Me’, a wave of skepticism washes over me.

Every January 1st epiphany feels more like performative self-improvement to me than genuine change. I mean, its just another day like every other day…there is a whole new date and a lot of food but asides that life doesn't suddenly magically reset.

Sure, the allure of a fresh start is tempting. But who says new beginnings need a grand entrance, complete with big gestures and resolutions? Instead of waiting for some significant date, what if we recognize the potential for change in our everyday life?

Imagine starting a diet on a random Tuesday evening in August or swapping your dress for those baggy jeans you’ve always wanted to wear on another Wednesday. These moments, not only huge life-altering decisions, have the power to reshape our lives.

New beginnings don't have to be big; they can be barely noticeable shifts. Swapping your usual Fanta for water, or even something as simple as choosing more colorful ear-rings, a barely visible defiance of routine. These seemingly insignificant choices have the ability to slowly create change in the long run.

This isn't to dismiss the value of reflection or goal-setting. But let's move beyond the pressure of forced transformations and embrace the change that comes with each decision. Instead of waiting for the next January 1st, let's celebrate the countless new beginnings hidden within the ordinary, embracing the power we hold to rewrite our stories, one small step at a time.
