"KINTSUGI"

There is something about metaphors that enables people relate easily with it. Recently, there has been a metaphorical video showing a broken glass, put together using a tape. Honestly, as a leftist i went through the comment section trying to understand why people were making this particular video become viral and it became clearer that they thought the glass was representing of their being. Some felt there was no essence in trying to repair something that has already been broken. This meant that no matter how much effort you put in trying to mend it, it would never be whole again. By the way, i disagree and i will tell you why in a bit.

What caught my attention was that people thought they were broken. I understand that certain metaphors can evoke catharsis and this particular metaphor made people see themselves as broken. For some, it made them see think that they were irreparable as the broken glass. First school of thought is quite complicated but I would let it out regardless. There is something, unexplainable that makes traumatized people feel like the star in a room full of sane people. For some reason, I have found that humans like to be associated with being broken because “Being complicated" is an attractive feature now a days.

Second school of thought is that since people hate to heal and prefer to be broken complicacies, the hate to attempt healing. This is why a case of being cheated on can last years and in those years, the character is on a heart breaking spree and toxic rampage. In this same light, they cling on to this pain because why not? It makes them complicated and complicated in this era, is attractive.

Here is my theory as a broken vessel myself. Have you ever heard of Kintsugi?

This is a japanese term describing the use of gold powder to repair a broken vessel that carried high importance. Instead of trashing it, they mixed gold and put it together. This act alone made the vessel even more beautiful than it was when it was whole.

Some people think they are so broken that tape cannot put them together and they are right. A master repairer would first of all study the broken piece. Observe the pattern of crack and what material can be best used to put it together. If you are following, you would understand that sometimes you are not the master repairer because you lack the actual experience, attention to details and creativity to patch people up. This is why you apply the wrong technique to the problem. You did not study the human. You never truly understood the pain or the pattern that triggers the trauma. So, your mistake is trying to hide the broken line with a tape but guess what? Internally, the crack is still there but externally, you only see the patch. Whereas, in Kintsugi, they use gold dust to highlight the cracks and line instead of hiding it. We do not need to hide our trauma and triggers. We only need someone who knows how to turn us into an adorable and exquisite broken piece. Being whole may not be our final destination but being broken is a journey we must follow to becoming who we are truly meant to be. Hitting the gym. Finding a new hobby, reconnecting with long lost friends is Kintsugi. Some people are the broken vessel and some the gold dust that refines, patches and beautifies the broken vessel. No one is greater than the other so beware. Also, you cannot patch every broken piece, else you will cut yourself and bleed. We are all broken in one way. The first step to Kintsugi is to accept that we are really broken and not run from that reality.
